The Election - Recap and What's Next?

Although we're all deeply saddened that James did not emerge victorious on February 27, there are so many things to be proud of.

Excepting the aldermanic races that will go to a run-off next month, this was the closest race in the City. James only lost by 690 votes.

In the 2003 election, the Ward had a total of 43 precincts, of which challenger Sandra Reed won 8. This year, the number of precincts expanded to 47, and James won 22, and tied 1.

This attests to the strength of James' message and platform, and to his devoted staff and cadre of volunteers.

This also attests to the growing dissatisfaction with the current Alderman and many of her policies.

Equally as significant, we captured 47% of the vote on a campaign budget that was less than half the amount spent by the incumbent in her re-election bid. We are very proud that more than 90% of James' funds came from residents of the 46th Ward, unlike Shiller's funds, which came from developers, attorneys and other special interests outside the Ward.

So, to all of you who worked so hard for a change, please don't give up. James and the majority of his campaign staff will continue to work hard to make the 46th Ward a better place. Join your neighborhood block clubs, and community councils, whether you live in Lakeview, Uptown, or Edgewater. Like many of you, these groups are trying to make their neighborhoods better every day. Let's work together!
